Anti-Virus

We are worried about the threat of virus infection, what should we do?

Talk to us!
We will analyse your current network and propose a solution that provides the anti-virus protection you need. We will also help you formulate an anti-virus policy and help you to educate your users on safe computing practices.

What is the W32.Sircam virus?

W32.Sircam is a worm virus that has an attachment that contains the virus and a message with a random subject line. Do not open these attachments.
The body of the message is random, but the English version always has the following:

First line: Hi! How are you?
Last line: See you later. Thanks.

To determine whether the virus has infected your system, perform the following steps:

  • Start the registry editor by clicking on Start->Run, typing 'regedit' and clicking OK.
  • Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\RunServices.
  • Look for Driver32=%System%\scam32.exe. If you find this entry, the virus has infected your computer.

For more information, visit your anti-virus vendors Web site, most of them have a free download that can search your machine for W32.Sircam.Worm and remove the virus.

Our users know not to double click on any unexpected email attachments. We should be ok, shouldn't we?

Attachments are one of the ways viruses can get into your network, but not the only way. People bringing in files from home can infect PCs and you may even become infected just by browsing web sites. Virus writers are coming up with new ways to spread their viruses almost daily so the best thing to do is to have a well thought out anti-virus policy and procedures in place that ensure that you make it as difficult as possible for them to infiltrate your network.

If you need help with any aspect of Anti-virus protection please contact us.

We have been infected by a virus worm. What should we do?

Consult your anti-virus vendor who should be able to point you in the right direction. Most anti-virus vendors have a section dedicated to disinfecting this type of worm. Sophos has one at http://www.sophos.com/support/faqs/worms.html .

Once you have disinfected the system you need to work out how and why you were infected and put in mechanisms to stop it happening again. If you need help with any aspect of Anti-virus protection please contact us.

Windows operating system

How do I install the Recovery Console in Windows 2000?

From within Windows 2000 do the following:

  • Insert the installation CD.
  • From a command prompt move to the I386 directory and type:
    winnt32 /cmdcons

A dialog will be displayed asking for confirmation.

  • Click Yes.

A file will be copied to the computer and an extra item added to the boot menu.
A completion message will be displayed.

  • Click OK.

Rebooting the computer will enable the option "Microsoft Windows 2000 Command Console" to be selected and will start Windows 2000 in command mode.

How do I start my computer in safe mode?

This depends on your operating system.

To enter Safe Mode in Windows 95:

  • Restart the computer. As the computer starts you will see a message that reads 'Starting Windows 95' . When you see this message press the F8 key. Then from the menu select option 3 for Safe Mode.

To enter Safe Mode in Windows 98:

  • Restart the computer. As the computer starts up during the black and white displays, hold down 'CTRL'. From the start up menu that appears select option 3 for Safe Mode.

How do I check for device conflicts?

Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel and double click on System. Choose the Device Manager tab.

Conflicts are indicated by coloured symbols next to the device.

Double click on Computer at the top of the list for a list showing the resources used by each device.

My Windows 9x clients cannot see shares over 12 characters. What can I do to fix this?

Windows NT and Windows 2000 allow shares to be created that are more than 12 characters. Windows NT and Windows 2000 based machines can see and use these quite happily. Windows 9x clients however can only connect to shares of 12 characters or less.

There is no fix for this. If you require Windows 9x clients to connect to a share make sure it is 12 characters or less.

How do I enable remote registry editing for Windows 9x clients?

You need to install a network service to enable remote registry editing. This service can be found in the following locations:

  • Windows 95: Windows 95 distribution CD, in the directory \tools\reskit\netadmin\remotreg
  • Windows 98: Windows 98 distribution CD, in the directory
    \admin\nettools\remotreg

Once you have located this directory,

  • Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel and double click on network.
  • Click the Add button in the Configuration tab.
  • Select Service from the list, and click the Add button.
  • Click the Have Disk button, and type in the directory information as above.
  • Select Microsoft Remote Registry.
  • Install the Remote Registry service, and reboot the computer when prompted.

A user has forgotten their Windows 9x password. How can it be reset?

To reset a password just delete the relevant .pwl file from c:\windows, e.g. andylawr.pwl for the name 'Andy Lawrence'. Then logoff and log back on again. At this point you will be prompted for a new password.

Caution: This will delete other windows 9x passwords such as information stored in dialup networking for logging onto your Internet service provider. Before attempting the above, ensure you know all your passwords and usernames for connecting to the Internet.

How do I join a client computer to the domain?

In Windows 9x:

  • Right click on Network Neighbourhood and click on Properties.
  • Click on Client for Microsoft Networking and click on Properties.
  • Tick logon to domain and put the name of the domain in the space provided.
  • Click on OK.
  • Click on the Identification tab and check that the workgroup name mentioned is the same as your domain name.
  • Click on OK and provide the Windows system CD if asked.
  • Reboot the computer.

When the computer restarts it should have 3 boxes on the logon screen: Username, Password and Domain.

In Windows NT:

  • Right click on Network Neighbourhood and click on Properties.
  • The lower part of the screen should tell you what domain/workgroup you are in. If it is wrong click on Change and Select Domain and type in the name of the domain.
  • Tick the box labelled 'use the following credentials' and provide a username and password of a user who has the appropriate rights to add a computer to the domain (the administrator is usually used).
  • Click OK on the message box welcoming you to the domain.
  • Restart the computer.

In Windows 2000:

  • Right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
  • Click on the Network Identification tab.
  • Click on the Properties button.
  • In the "Member of" box click on Domain and type in the domain name.
  • When prompted provide the username and password for a user who has the appropriate rights to add a computer to the domain (the administrator is usually used).
  • Click OK on the message box welcoming you to the domain.
  • Click on OK on the Network Identification page.
  • Restart the computer.

Some of the Windows 95/98 clients do not show up in Network Neighborhood. Why is this?

This is usually caused by the machines not having "File and Print Sharing" installed. To install this service:

  • Right click on Network Neighbourhood and click on Properties.
  • Click the button File and Print Sharing and then tick the appropriate options.

Why do I have to enter 2 passwords when logging onto the domain?

This is because your domain password and local windows password for your username are different.

To fix this either:

  • Delete your .pwl file in c:\windows and then logoff and log back on again. You will be asked for 2 passwords and you should use your domain password for both. The next time you logon you will only have to put this password in once.

Caution: This will delete other windows 9x passwords such as information stored in dialup networking for logging onto your Internet service provider. Before attempting the above, ensure you know all your passwords and usernames for connecting to the Internet.

Or,

  • Start the registry editor by clicking on Start->Run and typing 'regedit'.
  • Select the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
    \CurrentVersion\Policies\Network
  • From the Edit menu menu select New DWORD Value.
  • Enter a name of 'DisablePwdCaching' and press Enter.
  • Double click on the new value and set to 1.
  • Click OK.
  • Close the registry editor and reboot the machine.

Now the only password required is the domain password.
